Role

An opportunity has arisen within the Technologies Laboratory for the position of Materials Engineer - Chemist to act as Laboratory specialist in process chemistry, advising within the company the supply base and the operators on chemical processes and carrying out qualification of new and replacement material, in support of MoD IOS queries.

The primary areas of technical responsibility are related to surface treatments, including (but not limited to):

*Approval of process selection. Development and qualification activities required in making the design of the air-vehicle structure and dynamic components competitive and cost effective.
*Formulation of Materials, Processes and Procedures, Specifications and Departmental Instructions.
*Provide a materials engineering support function to the company, suppliers and key stakeholders.
*Perform routine mechanical testing of non-metallic materials.
*Perform specialist analytical tasks including AA, HPLC and FTIRS and routine chemical analysis.
*Provide specialist training and approval to both internal and external customers.
*Manage Departmental COSHH assessments and provide technical advice to the Safety and Environment department. Control the use of poisons within the department.

You will also be required to produce formal technical reports to a standard suitable for external circulation to bodies such as government agencies

Skills/Experience

*Educated to Degree level in Materials Science, Chemistry or a related Science or Engineering subject together with relevant experience, or HNC/HND/BTEC and Apprenticeship plus significant relevant experience.
*Knowledge and experience in materials engineering, including:
-A high level of expertise in surface modification processes including anodising, plating and painting.
-A high level of expertise in corrosion mechanisms on in-service components.
-A high level of expertise in material selection criteria used in the design process.
-A high level of expertise in regarding health safety and environmental requirements related to laboratory work and the company products.
-A good working knowledge of drawing and design processes.
-A good working knowledge of the relevant airworthiness requirements related to materials and processes.
-A working knowledge of environmental degradation processes including temperature, UV and moisture.
-A working knowledge of metallic materials.
-A working knowledge of composite components and adhesive bonding.
-A working knowledge of pyrometry.
